The exam is untimed, 35 questions and 80% to pass, and you get 3 attempts for $40. Here’s how to make the first attempt count.

1. **1. The official course (free).** Start with the [Serving It Right course](https://www.responsibleservicebc.gov.bc.ca/serving-it-right-course). It’s the material the exam is written from, about 4 hours, with videos and quizzes. Nothing replaces it.
2. **2. The official manual (free PDF).** The same page links a print manual. Handy for highlighting, and it has BAC charts, case studies and sample policies.
3. **3. Drill the topics people find hardest.** Standard drink math, the two-ID rule and the half-hour rules trip people up. Use our drills: [checking ID](https://servingitrighttest.ca/practice/checking-id), [intoxication](https://servingitrighttest.ca/practice/intoxication), [liquor law](https://servingitrighttest.ca/practice/liquor-law).
4. **4. Take full practice tests.** Our [35-question practice test](https://servingitrighttest.ca/serving-it-right-practice-test) uses the real exam’s length and 80% pass mark. Aim to pass comfortably a few times before paying for the exam.
5. **5. Read the why.** Every one of our answers explains the rule. The real exam is drawn at random, so understanding beats memorizing.

## What to skip

- **“Answer keys” for the real exam.** The questions are random and change; you also declare you did the exam on your own.
- **Other provinces’ courses.** Smart Serve or ProServe material doesn’t cover BC’s rules, like the two-ID rule or BC’s hours.
- **Cramming without the course.** The exam follows the course’s three modules closely.
