Serving It Right is British Columbia’s program. Every other province runs its own, with its own rules about outside certificates. Here’s what the official programs say.

*BC’s recognized programs, from “Who needs Serving It Right?” on responsibleservicebc.gov.bc.ca. The exemption is for servers and bartenders only; licensees, managers and supervisors need Serving It Right.*
| Province | Program | Does BC accept it for servers? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Alberta | ProServe (AGLC) | Yes, until it expires |
| Saskatchewan | Serve It Right Saskatchewan | Yes, until it expires |
| Manitoba | Serving It Safe / Smart Choices | Yes, until it expires |
| Ontario | Smart Serve | Yes, until it expires |

## Taking Serving It Right to Saskatchewan

“Serving It Right Saskatchewan” isn’t a thing: Saskatchewan’s program is **Serve It Right Saskatchewan (SIRS)**, run by Tourism Saskatchewan’s Workforce Development department with SLGA. Everyone who sells or serves alcohol in Saskatchewan restaurants, bars and liquor stores needs SIRS before their first shift, and enrolment costs $30. SLGA says that if you hold a valid server certificate from another province, you may be able to transfer it: contact Tourism Saskatchewan Workforce Development before you start work.

## Taking Serving It Right to Alberta

Alberta’s program is ProServe, run by AGLC. AGLC has an out-of-province recognition application for certificates from other provinces, so apply through AGLC rather than assuming your SIR counts.

## Taking Serving It Right to Ontario

Ontario requires certification from an AGCO Board-approved course, and Smart Serve is the approved program for bars and restaurants. Serving It Right isn’t on the AGCO’s list. See [Serving It Right vs Smart Serve](https://servingitrighttest.ca/vs/serving-it-right-vs-smart-serve).

> The Serving It Right program’s own advice: for transfers or exemptions in another province, contact that province’s responsible beverage program.

## Questions people ask

### Is Serving It Right valid in Alberta?

Not automatically. Alberta uses ProServe, and AGLC runs a recognition application for out-of-province certificates.

### Is Serving It Right the same as Serve It Right Saskatchewan?

No. They’re separate provincial programs. SLGA says a valid certificate from another province may be transferable; ask Tourism Saskatchewan.

### Can I use my Alberta or Saskatchewan certificate in BC?

Yes, as a server or bartender, until it expires. Managers and licensees need Serving It Right.
