Serving It Right in other provinces

Serving It Right is British Columbia’s program. Every other province runs its own, with its own rules about outside certificates. Here’s what the official programs say.
BC’s recognized programs, from “Who needs Serving It Right?” on responsibleservicebc.gov.bc.ca. The exemption is for servers and bartenders only; licensees, managers and supervisors need Serving It Right.

Taking Serving It Right to Saskatchewan

“Serving It Right Saskatchewan” isn’t a thing: Saskatchewan’s program is Serve It Right Saskatchewan (SIRS), run by Tourism Saskatchewan’s Workforce Development department with SLGA. Everyone who sells or serves alcohol in Saskatchewan restaurants, bars and liquor stores needs SIRS before their first shift, and enrolment costs $30. SLGA says that if you hold a valid server certificate from another province, you may be able to transfer it: contact Tourism Saskatchewan Workforce Development before you start work.

Taking Serving It Right to Alberta

Alberta’s program is ProServe, run by AGLC. AGLC has an out-of-province recognition application for certificates from other provinces, so apply through AGLC rather than assuming your SIR counts.

Taking Serving It Right to Ontario

Ontario requires certification from an AGCO Board-approved course, and Smart Serve is the approved program for bars and restaurants. Serving It Right isn’t on the AGCO’s list. See Serving It Right vs Smart Serve.

No. They’re separate provincial programs. SLGA says a valid certificate from another province may be transferable; ask Tourism Saskatchewan.

+Can I use my Alberta or Saskatchewan certificate in BC?

Yes, as a server or bartender, until it expires. Managers and licensees need Serving It Right.
